A Patient-Centered Approach to Sleep Apnea

EXCEPTIONAL CARE TO RESTORE YOUR SLEEP

Did you know that Grand Avenue Dental Studio is one of the only dental offices in Oklahoma that offers sleep apnea treatment? Sleep apnea treatment at our practice is completely personalized to each patient. If you are experiencing symptoms of sleep-related breathing problems such as snoring or sleep apnea, we invite you to make an appointment with us for a complimentary consultation.

At your appointment, our team can perform airway tests using the latest technology. Home sleep tests are available through our office if your insurance allows; otherwise, we can arrange an overnight sleep study with a sleep specialist.

Once your evaluation is complete and a sleep specialist has given an official diagnosis, your doctor will discuss possible treatment options with you. Many people assume CPAP is the only potential sleep apnea treatment. However, there are alternatives available, including oral appliances that are more comfortable and easier to use.

Understanding Sleep Apnea

WHAT IS IT

Sleep apnea is a serious health condition where your breathing stops and starts, diminishing your body’s oxygen intake. Sometimes a sleep apnea episode can last over a minute. If you have multiple episodes each night, it can lead to significant health complications, including increased risk of high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, and diabetes, among other things.

Airway collapse is when the soft tissues in the mouth, tongue, or throat block airflow while you sleep. Snoring is usually an early warning sign, indicating a narrow airway and inefficient breathing. If left untreated, snoring can escalate to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). When this happens, your narrow airway is completely blocked.

Sleep Apnea Risk

FACTORS THAT HEIGHTEN YOUR SUSCEPTIBILITY

Understanding the risk factors associated with sleep apnea can help you proactively seek treatment. It’s important to schedule an evaluation with a professional if you answer yes to two or more of the following:

  • Are you over 50?
  • Would you say you are overweight or obese?
  • Do you often feel fatigued during the day?
  • Do you suffer from high blood pressure?
  • Are you a loud snorer (consistently loud enough to be heard outside of your bedroom with closed doors)?
  • Has your partner ever noticed you stopping breathing in your sleep, even if just for a moment?
  • Do you have a neck more than 16 inches in circumference?
  • Are you male?

If you are at heightened risk of sleep apnea, we recommend you schedule an appointment for a sleep health evaluation as soon as possible.

Recognizing Sleep Apnea Symptoms

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

Not all snorers have sleep apnea, but one of the most common symptoms of sleep apnea is loud and persistent snoring. Pauses in breathing while sleeping followed by a gasping or choking sound are also key symptoms.

Many sleep apnea sufferers experience daytime fatigue because their quality of sleep is poor. Other symptoms include:

  • Persistent headaches
  • Difficulty concentrating due to tiredness
  • Irritability caused by constantly disrupted sleep patterns

Sleep Apnea Solutions Available

TAILORED TREATMENT TO MEET YOUR UNIQUE NEEDS

There are three main treatments for sleep apnea: oral appliances, a CPAP machine, and surgery:

Oral Appliances
Grand Avenue Dental Studio specializes in custom-made oral appliances to manage sleep apnea. These appliances hold your lower jaw open and forward, preventing the soft tissues of the neck and throat from collapsing. This helps to rule out the frequent breathing interruptions synonymous with sleep apnea.

Because our oral appliances are custom made, they will fit comfortably in your mouth while you sleep. We use SomnoMed Avant, which is a brand known for its high quality and exceptional comfort. Oral appliances are an easy-to-use solution for managing sleep apnea and snoring, providing an excellent alternative to CPAP machines.

Please note: Not all oral appliances are the same.
Our oral appliances are manufactured to strict standards. They are FDA-cleared specifically to manage sleep apnea. We also use the latest in acoustic imaging technology to ensure your jaw is held precisely in the correct position with your custom-made appliance.

Many manufacturers of at-home appliance kits and other over-the-counter devices may claim they help with snoring, but patients should do their due diligence before purchasing these products, which often lack the comfort and effectiveness provided by professionally crafted appliances.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
CPAP is one of the most common treatments used in sleep apnea management. When a patient wears a CPAP, they get a constant flow of air through a nasal mask that has a hose attached. Constant pressure in the airway pushes the collapsible tissues out of the way, maintaining an open and stable airway. While CPAP is an effective sleep apnea treatment, it can be challenging for some patients to tolerate. For that reason, many CPAP users become “noncompliant” and cease CPAP treatment due to the discomfort of using it nightly. If you don’t like wearing a CPAP mask every night and are looking for an effective alternative, please contact our team.

Surgery
Surgery can help by removing excess tissue located within the airway. If surgery is required, your doctor can discuss what options are available to you and recommend an appropriate specialist for next steps.

Introducing the Acoustic Diagnostic Imaging System

THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY FOR OPTIMAL RESULTS

Our practice uses an acoustic diagnostic imaging system to test our patients’ nasal and oral airways. With this technology, we can assess the size and collapsibility of your airways through sound waves. The pharyngometer part of the system measures the oral airway, while the rhinometer measures the nasal airway. These systems are cleared by the FDA and offer a highly effective way for our team to identify the site of your airway collapse and determine its severity.

At Grand Avenue Dental Studio, we use cutting-edge technology to provide the best possible treatment and outcomes for our patients.

If you snore or have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and are looking for a CPAP alternative, contact our team today.
